Handball: Darren Doherty picked up his third National title of the year when he won the Irish

U15 Junior National Competition. He was seeded number one and indeed was the only seeded

player to reach the semi-final where he met Padraig Quish from Limerick. It was a tough match

where Darren won the first game 21 – 14. In the second, he trailed 20 – 14 but with great serves

and low passing shots, he claimed the second game 21 – 20 to prevent it going all the way. In

the final he met Martin Mullins from Carlow and this was to prove an epic battle with both

players giving it their all. Not only was a national title at stake but a place on the Irish team

awaited the winner with a trip to San Diego to play in the US Nationals just after Christmas. In

the first game Darren trailed 20 – 14 but once again turned it around and won 21 – 20. In the

second Darren led 15 – 4 but Padraig slowed the game down and won 20 –19 forcing the match

into a tie-breaker. Darren turned on the style serving majestically and giving his opponent little

chance and ran out a deserving winner with both players exhausted after a tough day’s

playing. Congratulations to Darren and his mentor Peter Larkin and we look forward to

December when he will be a part of the Irish team to travel to the USA.

Juvenile Handball Best of luck to those taking part in the county blitz in St Melons and Bawn this weekend.
