For the second time in three days Monaghan United will once again be on the road when they travel to play Salthill Devon at Drom. It will be their second visit there this season, on the previous occasion United had a comprehensive 6-1 win. United opened the game with an early brace and after that the result was no longer in doubt. Credit to Salthill they put up a good performance in the final quarter and were rewarded with a goal. In the return game the result was closer with a winning score line of 3-0 in favour of Monaghan United. It was noticeable the improvement in Salthill performance from the first game. This is Salthill’s first season in the League of Ireland, no doubt they found the going tough and could never get out of the basement position in the table with just two wins against neighbours Mervue United and away to Wexford Youths and they had 12 draws. They have a tough task surviving in what one would consider a small pool alongside neighbours Galway United and Mervue United. Monaghan United know what it is like to survive with a poor support level. It would be unfair to judge Salthill solely on the performance of their first team, they have constructed fine playing facilities at Drom which includes a state of the art club house with all amenities and they have an excellent underage structure. This is a fixture that United should win comfortably, however Waterford United went there in the past month and had to settle for a 1-1 draw, Mick Cooke will be mindful of this and won’t be taking anything for granted. Hopefully the table top clash against Cork City three days earlier won’t have taken too much out of them and that the manager will have a full panel to select from and that they can put some daylight between themselves and the other promotion contenders |
