| Bermingham's strike puts Monaghan into quarter finals
Cork City Foras 0 - 1 Monaghan United For the third time this season Monaghan United came out on the correct side 1 - 0 result against Cork City Foras. Cork's George O Connor had the first strike at goal after 6 minutes but Sava got well behind it to gather. From the start United's Philly Hughes brought the game to Cork and had several attempts on goal the best of which was when he was played through by Karl Bermingham after 13 minutes. Aidan Collins picked out Hughes with a brilliant pass unfortunately he mistimed his header. Immediately at the other end Billy Woods volleyed straight at Sava. If Philly Hughes could miss a header at one end Graham Cummins showed he could do the same at the other end after O Callaghan pick him out beautifully , this was probably Co! rks best period and Davin O'Neill had another half chance when he headed weakly into the keepers hands. Corks brief period of dominance was brought to a sudden end, a quick ball out of defence and Alan Byrne picked out Karl Bermingham who muscled his way past Neal Horgan and blasted the ball to the back of the net. The goal came just two minutes after United lost their captain Dom Tierney and he was replaced by Stephen Mc. Crossan. As they have been demonstrating all season United's rearguard was in excellent form and although Cork did have some good possession they could never get into the area where they could hurt. United had most of the chances of the first half and in the closing 15 minutes tried hard to double their lead. The home side started brightly on the resumption and it took a fine save from Gabriel Sava to deny Shane Barrett the equaliser with his blistering strike. Cork tried hard for the equaliser but United's defence was unyielding. When Hughes had another excellent attempt to get United's second of the night after 75 minutes their Manager- Mick Cooke felt that he could copper fasten the lead and instead of trying to hold out he freshened up his attack by sending in Sean Brennan for Cathal O' Connor and he further stimulated the offensive by bringing on Darragh Hanaphy for man of the match Hughes on 86. It was another fine performance from Monaghan United and overall the about shaded it, which was no mean feat in a grounds like Turners Cross Cork City: Forasa Mark McNulty; Ian Turner, Greg O'Halloran, Neal Horgan, Billy Woods; Davin O'Neill, George O'Callaghan (Gearóid Morrissey, 82mins), Shane Duggan, Cillian Lordan; Shane Barrett (Gareth Cambridge, 82mins), Graham Cummins. |
