Monaghan United Club Notes

Airtricity League 1st Division
Athlone Town   v  Monaghan United
Monaghan United travel to Lisswollen for what they hope will be their final game of the season. Should they win this game and Shelbourne defeat Cork City then they are guaranteed automatic promotion and other results bar those two would involve some permutations and combinations and maybe even play-offs with Galway United.
Last weekend United saw their recent good run come to a end with a disappointing defeat at home to one of the other sides involved in the promotion stakes – Limerick FC so United will be hoping to put this result behind them. The Brennan brothers- Sean and Ryan power strike was sadly missed against Limerick, thankfully they and Keith Quinn return from suspension.  Monaghan United won in the previous two meetings between the sides and indeed on their previous visit to Lisswollen it was a comfortable 3-0 win.
Athlone Town who are in the lower reach of the table have little to gain from this encounter bar pride. On the recent form of both sides Monaghan should have enough left in the tank to finish the season wit a win and avoid the play offs or being consigned to the first Diviion for another season. Their manager Roddy Collins will have srrong panel to select from and will be taking nothing for granted.  United should be buoyed by a strong travelling support.
Play-Offs
The Airtricity Promotion/Demotion are as follows :
1st Leg
1st Division side (3rd placed side) will have home advantage against Galway United on Tuesday next 1st October.
Second leg on Friday 4th October, Galway United have home advantage and if the sides are level on aggregate at the end of this tie then there will be extra time with penalties if necessary
