| FAI/Ford 4th Round
Sligo Rovers v Monaghan United
Monaghan United leave the cauldron of the league to enter the furnace of the Cup when they travel to play Sligo Rovers in 4th Round of the FAI/Ford Cup next Saturday. A feeling of here we go again descended on the United supporters when the saw the names of the two club come out of the draw. Sligo defeated Monaghan in the Quarter Finals of this competition last season as well as in the final of the league Cup, both games took place in the Showgrounds as unfortunately as is this up coming game. The United fans who travelled there last season will remember that a capacity partisan crowd in the Showgrounds is a tremendous advantage to the home side.
Sligo Rovers will have to pick themselves up after their defeat to Derry City on Tuesday night in the semi-finals of the EA Sports Cup of which they are current champions. In what was an enthralling encounter and a great advertisement to league of Ireland football three times Sligo came from behind only to be denied in the end when the game was decided on penalties. Sligo sent out a strong selection in this game and United fans will be hoping that the energy expended in this encounter will be to their advantage on Saturday evening, but often such defeats can inspire a team. Prior to this game Sligo had some slippage especially going down at home to Bohemians, but they recovered well with a good away performa! nce and win against UCD in a game which they controlled throughout and should have won by Championship this season more than the only goal scored. Two interested spectators at that game were Monaghan United’s manager and coach- Roddy Collins and Aidan Lynch, no doubt copious notes were taken. Sligo Rovers are one of the sides fancied to win the Premier League
If Sligo Rovers are going well in the Premier Division, well Monaghan United are portraying equally good form in the first Division. They go into this game on the back of good wins against Limerick, Athlone Town and Waterford United in their last three outings. At the moment they are contesting second position in the table with Cork City and are still well within striking distance of leaders Shelbourne.
The two encounters against Sligo last season will stand well to United, they then felt unlucky not have got one win against the Premier Division side. If United can replicate there good form in the league this season they are more than capable of causing an upset. Both sides possess very astute and experienced managers and United fans are confident that Roddy is well capable of out manoeuvring Paul Cooke.
United expect to have a good support in the Showgrounds.
