1st Division Airtricity League.

Wexford Youths     v   Monaghan United monaghan_united

Monaghan United will hope to bounce back quickly from last week unfortunate defeat to Shelbourne and they have an excellent chance of doing so when they take on second from the bottom Wexford Youths. They game is away at Ferrycarrig Park,  never an easy venue. Wexford were beaten away by Athlone last , at half time with the sides going in scoreless it looked Like Wexford might get a valuable away point but the home side pulled away in the second half with a brace of goals.

Monaghan United’s performance against Shelbourne deserved at least a share of the points but the Dublin side knew how to protect the goal that they were fortunate to score. On the night many felt that United were probably the better side, they created the most chances particularly in the second half, but Shels converted the one that counted. The manager Roddy Collins if disappointed with the result was well satisfied with the overall performance, he will not allow his charges to dwell on that result but will drive them on to make a fast recovery.  Despite last weeks defeat United a still in joint third with a game in hand.  Collins is availing of the transfer window to strengthen his side. A small gap is developing between the top four and the rest of the table, United will endeavour to hold on to second, on l! ast weeks performance Shelbourne should loose points so by no means have they won the title.

I t would be disappointing if United were not to get at least a draw.

Verdict – Away win.

Monaghan United  v  Mervue United

Monaghan United’s next  home game is on Friday 15th August. This is very much a revenge game for the Mons supporters as they saw their side suffer its  first of only two defeats in the league.  It was a result that caught everyone by surprise because at the time Mervue were disputing bottom of the table position with their neighbours Salthill Devon, but since then some of the results that they have achieved would leave one to believe that it was no flash in the pan.  In each of the three seasons since being admitted to the league of Ireland  Mervue United have proved difficult for Monaghan United.

Full match preview in next weeks Northern Standard.
