Met Eireann have warned of a potentially serious weather event over the coming days. Storm conditions with high winds and heavy rain will spread from the south west with flooding and property damage likely. Flooding is also very likely in coastal areas where seasonal high tides are expected on Sunday and Monday afternoon. With your safety in mind, we have compiled the following quick list of things to do:
- Ensure all items outside your house such as garden furniture, trampolines, children's toys etc. are stored indoors. If this is not practical, ensure that these items are secured to an immoveable object.
- Check for any lost or damaged roof tiles, slates or gutters and have repaired if possible.
- Ensure all windows and doors on your house and outbuildings are closed and tightly fastened.
- Make sure you know how and where to turn off your gas, oil, water and electricity supplies.
- Remove all leaves from drains and gutters.
- Close the valves on oil or gas tanks outside your home.
- Move as many items as you can upstairs. If not, try to raise furniture items off the ground. Put chairs on tables, tables on blocks etc.
- Plug all sinks, baths, washing machines, dishwashers & toilets to prevent backflow of water. Washing machines and dishwasher outlets can be plugged with cloths and toilet bowls can be plugged with sandbags. Weigh down any manholes outside.
- If possible, park your car in your garage and do not leave it parked under a tree or other moveable objects.
- In areas at risk from flooding, remove your car from underground car parks and move to higher ground.
The above tips will help to protect you, your home and family during any adverse weather.
