Monaghan Sports Partnership focus on Disability Sports Riding for the disabled-Monaghan Branch Riding for the Disabled Association of Ireland is part of an International voluntary organisation which provides the opportunity of recreational and therapeutic riding to people with a disability who might benefit in their general health and happiness. Lessons for riders of all ages, abilities and disabilities are the keystone of the work. There is no charge for riders and funds to run the groups are raised voluntarily at national and local level. Each group has its own committee, group organiser, riding instructor, and therapist and a number of voluntary helpers. The Monaghan group of RDAI have weekly lessons each Tuesday morning. Participants are encouraged to develop co-ordination, listening, observational skills, and practical life skills while providing a less clinical form of physical therapy through equestrian sport. A group of twelve young people participate in this activity, and a range of skills are promoted. Among the many exciting events and achievements over the past few years, they had many riders achieving grades in proficiency tests. In 2006 one of their riders Katie Martin represented the group at the Dublin Show in the RDS where she ably demonstrated her riding skills along with representatives from a number of other groups around the country. Katie has since progressed to taking part in rides outside RDAI, cantering and jumping. This year the Balmoral Show has invited two riders from the group to represent Ireland, demonstrating their equestrian skills, and currently Tom Cloonan and Áine Mulligan are preparing for this event on 12th May. Geraldine Bellew from Cloncaw Equestrian Centre is providing ponies and transport to Balmoral. Monaghan Sports Partnership has supported this group over the years and would like to wish the club and its participants every success.
