Self employed workers in Monaghan may be entitled to jobseekers allowance if their business is in trouble, according to local Fianna Fáil TD Margaret Conlon.  Deputy Conlon has reassured business owners across Monaghan that state support is available if their company ceases trading or their income drops significantly.

Deputy Conlon explained, “I have spoken to many self employed people across the county who are confused about their entitlements if their business is in trouble. The Minister for Social Protection Éamon Ó Cuív has now moved to clear up this confusion. He has reassured self-employed workers that support is available to them if they lose their job or their income is heavily hit by a down turn in demand.

“Self-employed workers who do not qualify for a social insurance-based benefit may be entitled to Jobseeker’s Allowance, subject to a means test. Their income and activity levels over the past 12 months are used as a guide for future earnings, however the system recognises that circumstances have changed for many businesses so it’s not assumed that income during the upcoming year will be the same.

“When granting job seekers allowance to self employed workers, consideration is given to each worker’s individual situation and the overall economic climate.  After 12 months on the live register, self-employed workers can apply for a place on the new Tús initiative or the Community Employment Scheme to bring them back into the workplace while they continue to receive job seekers allowance.

“I am deeply aware of the difficulties experienced by many Monaghan businesses due to the economic situation. A central part of the Fianna Fáil plan is to provide greater support for small and medium enterprises to secure their future and allow them to grow. I want to reassure those who are experiencing serious difficulties at this time that help is available to them. I urge anyone who is unsure about their entitlements to contact my office and I will help them get the assistance that’s available to them,” concluded Deputy Conlon.
