Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil TD Margaret Conlon has confirmed that an extra €470,000 has been granted to Cavan and Monaghan County Councils to cover the exceptional costs associated with the recent severe weather conditions. Cavan has been allocated €358,000 while Monaghan has secured €112,000.

The local Deputy explained, “My colleague the Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government Éamon Ó Cuív TD has allocated additional support for those areas around the country that were badly hit by the severe weather conditions in December and January. A total of €9 million is being provided nationally, with this region securing a large chunk of that funding.

“It’s a major boost to the local authorities in Monaghan and Cavan. Both councils have worked tirelessly to repair the damage caused by the heavy snow and quick thaw this winter. I want to pay tribute to the staff who went above and beyond to ensure our roads were as safe as possible during the unprecedented bad weather over Christmas, and continued that work to repair any damage caused.

“This resulted in exceptional costs for the council at a time when finances are already constrained.  I know the matter was a cause of great concern for council officials and I am delighted that they have now been provided such a significant funding boost. I wish to thank Minister Ó Cuív for his commitment to this issue,” concluded Deputy Conlon.
