So finally the end has come to the Brian Cowen farce, the end of the Government that has brought the nation to the very edge of disaster! The property bubble has burst, banking crisis deepens, the dole queues lengthen and each day brings news of more job losses, factory closures and the false economy built on hopeless dreaming. It is hard, if not impossible, to imagine that Ireland, so recently the economic miracle of the world, has been laid so low so quickly. Yet to hundreds of thousands of Irish people awakening from the hopeless dream has been an awakening to a living nightmare. One opportunity remains and one alone. Now the Irish people get to speak, their voice at the ballot box that must be heard.
Yet with the departure of the Fianna Fail/Green Government comes a prospect no better, and the hope raised may quickly be a hope dashed. Nothing in the policies or statements of the opposition parties give any real prospect of new thinking, new ideas, new direction. A rehash of the same tired old nonsense that got us into the current mess is being peddled from every side of the House of Dail Eireann with no person or party to represent the interests of the ordinary people emerging. Brian Cowen is gone but in essence Fianna Fail said he had to go but had done nothing wrong, FineGael and Labour say he had to go, so they could do the same. Right down to the finishing line they even cut a deal to pass a Finance Bill that they knew, and we know is a fraud.
Ireland needs a new beginning!
That is why as part of the new beginning I have decided to put my name before the Irish people as a candidate for the Constituency of Cavan Monaghan. The problems of this constituency are well known to all the parties, the problems are well known to all the people.
Without a voice in Dail Eirean the solutions to those problems will be set aside in the interests of political party machines, property developer cronies and the corrupt banking class. I don't and won't speak for those interests or on behalf of those parties. As an Independent I have the willingness, the determination, the courage, and crucially the freedom to work for and speak for the ordinary “coping class” people of this constituency. My record in representing people at a local level speaks for itself; I have not let them down at home, I will not let them down in Dail Eireann, and I will strive to work with other Independents elected throughout the country, who are equally determined to put the national interest above personal or political gain.
If the people of Cavan and Monaghan will stand with me then we together can give hope to hundreds of thousands throughout this country who do not now have hope. The 500,000 plus who have lost their jobs, the 300,000 plus householders in negative equity, the 70,000 householders who cannot pay the money lender mortgages on property bubble homes, the young 90,000 plus young people forced once again into the choicless option of emigration.
This election is unlike any other since the foundation of the State. On one side are the forces of the establishment who have brought us to this sorry condition, on the other side the ordinary people armed with only one defence, their vote. This country of ours is confronted with an economic affliction of great proportions; we are suffering for one of the longest and worst sustained mismanagement and corruption in our national history. Our Government had, and the next is set to pile deficit upon deficit, mortgaging our future and our children’s future for the temporary convenience of the greedy and corrupt. To continue this trend is to guarantee tremendous, social, cultural, political and economic upheavals. We must act today in order to preserve tomorrow!
I do not believe a terrible fate will befall us no matter what we do; I do believe a terrible fate will fall on us if we do nothing. If you want a strong and prosperous nation, that knows no special interest except that of the Irish people, if you want a return to integrity and honesty in political life, if you want to begin an era of national renewal then I, Seamus Treanor, am your candidate and I need your vote!
