Humphreys outlines FG position on College Fees

During a recent visit to Castleblayney College, Fine Gael General Election Candidate Cllr Heather Humphreys was asked to outline her party’s position on the reintroduction of third level fees. At present, every student is, in theory, entitled to study one degree without paying fees. However as Cllr Humphreys pointed out the reality of the situation is quite different.“It is my view that under the present system, fees are being reintroduced via stealth as most colleges and universities charge an annual registration fee in the region of €1,500.”

Cllr Humphreys says that in the current economic situation, the registration fee can be a bridge too far for many families.

“There are enormous financial pressures already facing families trying to send their children to college. The price of accommodation and the cost of living means many families are already struggling. It is wholly unfair that any young person who wants to pursue third level education is denied that right because they or their family cannot afford rising registration fees.”

In this respect, Cllr Humphreys contends the Fine Gael model will alleviate the pressure on students and their families at the point of entry to third level education.

“It is Fine Gael policy to abolish college registration fees altogether. Instead we will introduce a system of deferred contribution whereby, once a student leaves college and starts working, they will make a contribution through the PRSI system. This contribution will be no more than 30% of the cost of the student’s education”.

“It is my firm belief that the young people of this country will be the cornerstone of any economic recovery. It is absolutely vital therefore, that they will not be denied third level education due to financial constraints,” said Cllr Humphreys.
