| Cllr Heather Humphreys was born in Drum, just a few miles outside of Cootehill, reared on a farm and educated at St. Aidan’s Comprehensive. From there, she went on to forge a career for herself in the financial services industry. For many years she worked in the Ulster bank in Cavan town and later in Ballyconnell and Swanlinbar. She currently works as the Manager of Cootehill Credit Union.
Heather is married with two daughters and living on a farm in Aghabog, Co. Monaghan. She believes that her experience in the real world through her work in the Credit Union gives her a clear understanding of the huge problems facing families today. She is also acutely aware of the difficulties facing retail and indigenous industries and understands the importance of cash flow to businesses. Her financial experience in both personal and business matters coalesced with a farming background will make her a strong voice for the people of Cavan-Monaghan if elected to Dail Eireann.
Humphrey’s political career began in 2003 when she was co-opted on to Monaghan County council to replace Seymour Crawford in the Clones Electoral area. She retained her seat in 2004 and topped the poll in the 2009 local elections. She had the privilege to serve as Mayor of Co. Monaghan last year. Observers have pointed to her straight talking honest approach and strong work ethic on the ground as the reasons behind her electoral success to date. The selection of Cllr Humphreys at the Fine Gael convention was something of a break with tradition in that she will be the first female candidate to run for Fine Gael in Cavan-Monaghan.
At the recent launch night for her campaign, Cllr Humphreys condemned the current government for leaving the people of Ireland in a state of despair. “We all know about the shenanigans that have went on within Fianna Fail over the last few weeks, it’s easy now to see that Micheal Martin and his cohorts focus was not on passing the finance bill, instead they have been focused on trying to save seats for Fianna Fail. Is it any wonder people are disillusioned with politics?”
“The onus is now on Fine Gael, and myself as a candidate, to get out and show the people that in fact we are not all the same. With that in mind, it is my intention to run a campaign based on honesty and integrity. If we are upfront with the people, they will respect us for it and we, as a nation, can all move forward from there.” |
