A series of large school extensions or new school buildings are on the way for Monaghan, according to local T.D. Margaret Conlon.

The Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills Mary Coughlan T.D. has published details of the school buildings work programme for 2011. A number of Monaghan schools at primary, secondary and third level have been granted the go ahead to proceed to the next stage of expansion.

Deputy Conlon explained, “I am delighted to confirm that three local schools have been given the green light to seek planning permission for major refurbishment works. Monaghan Model School is to get a significant extension and will now go for planning approval.  The Department of Education and Skills has also given the go ahead for brand new school buildings for Gaelscoil Ultain and Gaelcoláiste Oiriall.”

“Much credit is due to the schools’ principles, staff, students and parents who have worked hard to secure the funding for these much needed developments. It means that the teachers and students will soon enjoy a greatly enhanced learning environment.”

“On top of this, Monaghan Institute for Further Education and Training will also proceed to the planning stage for an entire new building. I am delighted that we have secured the formal commitment for this as demand for places at MIFET continues to increase at record levels.”

“I welcome the Tánaiste’s commitment to each of these projects, which in my view are urgently required. I know that the expanding population means that the existing facilities are not enough and substantial developments are needed,” said Deputy Conlon.
