| The driver of one of the cars involved in a three-car pile-up which left three people and an unborn baby dead, appeared in court in Carrickmacross in front of Judge Sean Mac Bride on crutches last night.
Kevin McArdle (29), of Longfield, Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan was charged with dangerous driving causing death and driving with excess alcohol. He was the driver of a silver BMW involved in the horror smash on the Carrickmacross bypass at Monaltybane, on December 27. Mr McArdle had sustained a broken leg and pelvis in the smash and arrived in court on crutches. He was remanded on continuing bail of €1,000 and an independent surety of €500 to a sitting of the court on February 23. A number of conditions were imposed and legal aid was granted. Garda Sergeant James Gallagher, Carrickmacross, gave evidence of arrest , charge, and caution of Mr McArdle at Carrickmacross garda station earlier yesterday. Mr McArdle made no reply to the charges. Garda Superintendent Noel Cunningham, prosecuting, told the court that he was awaiting further instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions. He said the State had no objection to bail on the condition that Mr McArdle surrender his passport, stay out of licenced premises in the Carrickmacross area. He also has to observe a curfew, and reside at his mother's home at Longfield, Carrickmacross. |
