Within the next few weeks of 2011 a new roadside drug tests are to be introduced here to combat the growing problem of people driving under the influence of drugsThe tests will make it easier for Gardai to prosecute those under the influence of drugs who have found it difficult recently to prove. Until now motorists who pass a breath test for alcohol but appear intoxicated can't be checked for drugs however that is about to change. From next month those who risk getting behind the wheel under the influence of drugs will face stringent new tests.
Gardai are being trained to carry out physical tests, which will include checking for dilated pupils, standing on one leg and walking in a straight line. A driver who refuses to take the roadside test could face a €5000 fine or six months behind bars. |
