A  thaw will start to  set in across the county  within the next few days but motorists are still being urged to take care on the roads. The next problem drivers and pedestrians may face will be slush and slippery conditions with the snow and ice melting.Temperatures fell to as low as minus 10 and 12 degrees in parts of Monaghan last night and are forecast to fall to minus 9 tonight

Secondary routes and local roads remain treacherous, with solid ice and compacted snow the main problems now.
Both the Gardai and Monaghan  County Council are advising people and all road users to take extreme care while travelling.
They say that even roads which have been treated may be hazardous as melting snow will refreeze. Only absolute essential journeys should only be undertaken.
