On Monday night last County Monaghan Senior Football Stalwart Vinny Corey, was in Carrickmacross to perform the task of launching Monaghan’s second Farney Barney Boxing Night. The novel boxing spectacle is to be held in Fiddlers Elbow on Tuesday 28th December and will feature representatives from many of County Monaghan’s Football Clubs.

The Farney Barney which was introduced last year and is the brain child of former Monaghan Football Manager Seamus Mc Enaney was an overnight success and this year the popular Corduff man has agreed to run this years Farney Barney event for his own south Monaghan Club.

The Farney Barney is a novel boxing spectacle which will see a host of Club and County players battle it out in the ring as opposed to on the pitch in a novel and entertaining event. The participants could be in the ring for 3 rounds providing there is no knock outs or the referee does not intervene.  The event is being promoted by Cathal O Grady of White Collar Boxing

Last years event which was a huge success put some very entertaining pairings in the ring and it is anticipated that some of these will be seeking rematches in an effort to restore pride!  With Currin Player Dick Clerkin present at the Launch, there are some early expectations that his may well be one of the repeat bouts on the night which would certainly be a highlight.

A number of Club and County  players who would be willing to pick up a set of boxing gloves and undergo a training programme which would equip them with the necessary skills to last a full round in the boxing ring against a member of their rival clubs!  The training will take place each week in the run up to the event.

Speakers at the launch included County Monaghan Footballer Vinny Corey, Corduff Club Chairman Padraig Mc Eneaney and former County Manager Seamus Mc Enaney.

Chairman of Corduff GFC Padraig Mc Eneaney said he was pleasantly surprised with the early response to the request and the enthusiasm with which the various clubs had towards the novel event. He thanked all those players who sportingly agreed to participate and had a special thanks for the various sponsors who had also agreed to be part of the event.

Speaking at the launch Seamus Mc Enaney, explained how the idea of the White Collar Boxing event originated.  He said the staging of the event not only created interest  but also created bonds between Club and County players and  also provided a platform where players if they desired could come together over the winter months to work on their own personal level of fitness as well as having a bit of fun in the process.

He added that this year’s event would also feature 2 ladies bouts and also a celebrity bout. However he said the event could not take place without the intervention of local businesses who were willing to sponsor the event.  These sponsors had generously agreed to be associated with either the individual boxers or the 12 or so bouts on the night.  He thanked all the ‘would be’ boxers who had agreed to participate, and was confident that the second Farney Barney event would live up to all expectations.

In conclusion he encouraged all present to promote the event on the 28th December and he anticipated that it would be a sell out event and therefore encouraged people to get their tickets in good time.  Tickets are available from the Corduff Club, Fiddlers Elbow, Westenra Arms Hotel, Declan Loughman Sports and participating boxers.

Tickets this year will be at a same price of €30.
