Broadband rollout will greatly benefit education – Conlan
Cavan/Monaghan Fine Gael Dáil Deputy Seán Conlan has said this week that the national roll-out of high speed broadband to all Second Level schools will greatly benefit the education of students in the constituency as well as across the country.  A total of nineteen second level schools in the Cavan/Monaghan constituency will benefit from the Broadband rollout -  11 schools in County Monaghan and a further 8 in County Cavan.
Deputy Conlan said: “Following representations made by me to the Minister for Education and Skills Ruairi Quinn TD and the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte TD on behalf of schools in the constituency,  I have now received written confirmation from the Ministers that Cavan and Monaghan secondary schools have been chosen to be  included in the first phase of the broadband rollout.”
Deputy Conlan said: “The national roll-out will be completed over three stages with 200 schools being connected by September 2012, a further 200 being connected next year and the remaining 250 schools being connected in 2014.”

The programme follows on from the successful pilot project that has been running since 2009. The pilot involved 78 second level schools where the use of broadband has been shown to have improved both teaching and learning.
Deputy Conlan added "By introducing this initiative the Government is ensuring that appropriate digital technology and high-speed internet are in place in our schools as a basic building block to deliver a 21st Century learning experience to all learners. I commend Ministers Quinn and Rabbitte on this initiative,” said Deputy Conlan.
“This major ICT investment in our education system follows on from the commitment in the Programme for Government to incorporate the integration of ICT in teaching and learning across the curriculum and to invest in broadband development to ensure schools have access to modern high-speed networks,” concluded Deputy Conlan.
