“On yer bike” for The Carrickmacross Lions Club North East Cycle Challenge.
The cycling community of Carrickmacross has joined forces with The Carrickmacross Lions Club to launch The North East Cycle Challenge, which will take place on Sunday May 6th 2012.
Carrickmacross Lions Club President Andrew Spare welcomed the support of local cyclists who have been instrumental in organising the cycle challenge. He stated that “the aims of the North East Cycle Challenge are to promote a healthier active lifestyle through cycling and to raise funds for the provision of a weekly bus service which takes Alzheimer’s patients to the Drumkill Day Care Centre in Threemilehouse. We would be hopeful of attracting cyclists from near and far and plan to provide them with a great welcome and an enjoyable day out”.
Declan Keenan of The Carrickmacross Cycling Club believes that “the event will cater for all cyclists, with the 100km Drumlin Route extending through parts of Cavan and mid Monaghan and the 30km Oriel Route which will have the picturesque village of Tallanstown as its destination”. He added that anyone interested in getting ready for the Challenge are welcome to join them on their weekend spins leaving Carrickmacross Courthouse on Saturdays and Sundays at 9.30am for advanced cyclists. Beginners are welcome on Sundays at 10am and leisure cyclists start at 10.30am on Sundays. Contact Patrick Cassidy on  087-9010597 for further details.
Darren Scotson of The Phoenix Leisure Centre also welcomed this new sporting venture and announced an extra Spinning Class at 8pm on Tuesdays to cater for people who want to start training. The centre’s Figure Firming and Core Conditioning Classes would also benefit potential cyclists who set a goal to complete The North East Cycle Challenge. For more information call 042-9661981 or check out The Phoenix Leisure Centre Facebook Page.
Michael Clarke of The Carrick Cycle Centre believes that “The North East Cycle Challenge will appeal to both established cyclists throughout the North East and also to people who are thinking of taking up cycling for the first time. Cycling is growing in popularity and the Oriel Route will be very manageable for people who start a simple 6 week training plan which is available on the Carrickmacross Lions Club website”.
Carrickmacross Lions Club President Andrew Spare encourages all people interested in participating in this charity event to register online at the new Carrickmacross Lions Club website which contains the training plan and information on the two routes. Cyclists also have the option of completing a Sponsorship Card which will help further support the Lions Club in their provision of the weekly bus service for Alzheimer patients in Co. Monaghan. Registration Forms and Sponsorship Cards can be downloaded from the website and are also available at the Shirley Arms Hotel in Carrickmacross and from Carrick Cycle Centre.
