Monaghan Student entrepreneur set to bank €25,000!
The NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards has now progressed to the final stage of the competition, with the announcement of the eight finalists, who will each receive an investment of €500 into their projects. An NUI Galway Student from Monaghan features among the finalists.
Senan Mac Aoidh an Arts Student from Monaghan is part of An Mheitheal Rothar (The Bicycle Gang) team which hopes to set up a free, student-run bicycle workshop at NUI Galway to promote and support the benefits of bicycling.
The competition successfully attracted undergraduate and postgraduate entrants from across all of the colleges and schools of the University, from which eight ideas were chosen to progress to the final stage. They will compete for a top prize of €10,000 investment capital in their project along with two runner up prizes of €5,000 each.
The awards judging panel consists of: Dr. Aidan Daly, Adjunct Professor of Marketing in the J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics, NUI Galway; Judy Greene the founder of Judy Greene Pottery and an Irish Female Ambassador for Entrepreneurship; Neil Johnson the Chief Executive of Croí, the West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation; Fergal McGrath the former General Manager of the Galway Arts Festival, former Managing Director of the Druid Theatre Company and a former Manager of the Town Hall Theatre and Helen Ryan an NUI Galway graduate who is CEO of Creganna-Tac tx, a global leader in the medical devices and life-science industry.
As part of the final assessment of their entries, students will receive an investment of €500 into their projects, and will also take part in intensive workshop sessions on areas such as accounting and marketing to help them develop their final business plan.
The finalists are required to prepare their final business plans for submission on Friday, March 2nd ahead of the final presentation of their ideas to the judging panel on Wednesday, March 28th. The winners will be announced at the final awards ceremony dinner on Friday March 30th in the Bailey Allen Hall, Áras na Mac Léinn.
Emmet Connolly, President of NUI Galway Students’ Union, said:
“We have been overwhelmed by the number and standard of entries to the NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards again this year. The entrants are testament to the exceptional initiative and creativity of students in social and business enterprise. They show that students are both able and willing to create the big ideas that will help fuel our recovery. The Students’ Union is delighted to be in a position to facilitate some of these ideas as they take their first steps. I have no doubt but that we are working with the leaders of the future.”
