Castleblayney 5km flat race
Wednesday, 16 November 2011 18:15
Castleblayney 5km flat race is the inaugural road race to be held in Castleblayney and will serve as an excellent road race before the Christmas season takes hold. Hosted by the Castleblayney Faughs GAA club, the event will also mark the completion of the 12 week fitness, health and well-being programme run by the club in the community that encouraged local people to become more active and healthy. This programme set many participants the target of completing this 5km run at the end of the 12 weeks, over 100 people have to date been regular attendees at the weekly circuit training classes and weekly training runs. Other activities included in the programme have included Boxercise, Pilates, Zumba, Yoga, cycling and hill walking.
Special guest on the day will be Gerry Duffy DECA Ironman & 32 Marathons. Gerry will also be giving a talk to all the competitors after the race and this will prove to be very popular with many given Gerrys recent achievements and the success of his book (Who Dares Runs) about the 32 marathons in 32 days that he undertook. The route itself has been set and measured by Athletics Ireland who will also be in attendance on the day. The route is a fast flat route and will represent a great opportunity for personal bests and will be timed (not chip timing).
Many local competitors have already committed to the race including local international Triathletes Dessie Duffy, Liam Dolan and Karl Kildea which itself should prove a very entertaining race. Many other local GAA personalities have also signed up for the event which should see a competitive edge between familiar faces!
The race itself will see each finisher receive a medal and goody bag. There will also be trophies/prizes for Male 1 & 2, Female 1 & 2, Junior Male, Junior Female as well as prizes for the fastest Santa (hat and beard), fastest family team (2 members combined time) and best Operation Transfaughmation finisher.
The starting and finish point will be the town itself and their will be plenty of activities on the day to make it a fun, family day so everyone is encouraged to take the kids and family, the big man Santa himself may also make an appearance!
The race is in support of the local St Mary's Hospital Patient Fund, Irish Heart Foundation and Castleblayney Faughs Juvenile club. It promises to be a fun filled day and an excellent race to enjoy before the Christmas season sets in.
