The decision by An Bord Pleanala to grant planning permission for a new retail centre at Killycard on the outskirts of Castleblayney came under fire at the June monthly meeting of Castleblayney Town Council.

The granting of the permission goes against the town council’s policy of retaining all retail activity in the town where there is substantial space available. Outgoing Mayor Joe Brennan described the move as “ridiculous” and said it “flew in the face of democracy.” He stated that the issue needed a full and thorough investigation. “The retail trade in this town is on its knees and we have been trying to keep the vitality alive. How Bord Pleanala granted this permission and why, I don’t know but they are going to have to explain themselves,” Cllr Brennan fumed before proposing a letter expressing the view of the council would be sent to Minister for the Environment John Gormley.

The Independent councillor added that the approved land was not zoned for retail activity. Fine Gael councillor Gary agreed with Cllr Brennan and said the issue presented a potentially very dangerous situation. “Questions need to be asked as this is not in the best interests of the town.” Sinn Féin’s Jackie Crowe also showed his support for Cllr Brennan’s proposal but added that he felt the council would be fighting a losing battle as he described An Bord Pleanala as “a law unto themselves.”
