Mitchell’s experience can benefit Ireland – Humphreys
![]() As the Presidential campaign enters the final week, Fine Gael TD for Cavan/Monaghan Heather Humphreys this week outlined the credentials of her party’s candidate, Gay Mitchell.
“I believe that Gay Mitchell has the experience and the work ethic to make an excellent President and this is best demonstrated by the energy and enthusiasm that he has displayed in his role as a public representative over the course of three decades.
“Gay’s political career began as a councillor and he subsequently worked as a TD in Dail Eireann for 26 years. Gay is a former Lord Mayor of Dublin and is also a former Minister for European Affairs. He has served as a MEP since 2004.
“As a councillor, Gay was a member on the housing committee and worked tirelessly in improving people’s living conditions. Later in his role as Lord Mayor he set up a housing commission which was chaired by the late Dr Garret FitzGerald.
“It is worth remembering that when he was Lord Mayor of Dublin Gay formed the Dublin International Sports Council which brought major international events such as the tall ships and the Tour de France to Dublin. If he were to have the same impact as President in attracting events of similar stature to Ireland, it would be a great boost for the tourism sector.

Gay has presented a clear vision of the role that the President can play in contributing to Ireland’s economic recovery. It is important to understand that the President can play a major role with the Government, with the IDA and with international trade delegations. In that respect, it is important to send out the message that we have a President who can work in harmony with the Government,” concluded Deputy Humphreys.
Humphreys welcomes funding for Gym projects in Monaghan/Carrick
Local Fine Gael TD Heather Humphreys has welcomed the news that the St Peter’s lake area in Co Monaghan is to be provided with €11,000 in funding for the provision of outdoor gym equipment.
“I am pleased to see that the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD has allocated this level of funding for the St Peter’s lake area, it is important that amenities such as this are provided so that people, young and old, can avail of adequate recreational facilities. Peter’s lake forms the centrepiece of Monaghan town and this funding will allow for its further enhancement.
