Humphreys welcomes extension to slurry spreading deadline
Fine Gael TD for Cavan Monaghan Heather Humphreys has welcomed the recent announcement by Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan that the deadline for spreading slurry is to be extended until the end of October.
Speaking on the matter, Deputy Humphreys said that “a number of farmers in the Cavan and Monaghan area have contacted me in relation to this issue and I have subsequently raised the matter with both the Minister for Agriculture, Mr Simon Coveney TD and the Minister for the Environment, Mr Phil Hogan TD. I am therefore satisfied to learn today Wednesday that the deadline will be extended until the end of October.
“This extension is necessary due to the prolonged level of rainfall that we have experienced during the year and particularly in the August and September months. These adverse weather conditions have caused significant hardship for farmers and have made it extremely difficult for them to carry out their regular farming activity. As a result many farmers have struggled to complete their normal slurry spreading operations in advance of the deadline on 15 October.
“This two week extension will allow farmers an opportunity, weather and ground conditions permitting, to complete landspreading activities that for reasons outside of their control, have been curtailed during late August and throughout September owing to the exceptional weather conditions that we have experienced,” concluded Deputy Humphreys.
