Dartrey Forest Opens to Horses for National Trails Day
This coming Sunday, 2nd October is National Trails Day. Dartrey Estate, which runs from Rockcorry Co Monaghan to Cootehill Co Cavan, will open its gates to horses and ponies for the afternoon.  Monaghan Pony Club is organising a supervised ride-out for ponies starting at 2pm. Members of any Pony Club are welcome to attend.  Then, at 2.30pm, it’s the turn of the horses, as members of the British Horse Society Ireland are welcomed onto the estate to go-as-you-please along the laneways of the estate.
Access to Dartrey is confined strictly to members of Pony Club or the BHS, for insurance reasons. However, it is possible to join the BHS on the day, so that you can avail of this opportunity to get off the busy roads and enjoy the beautiful mature woodlands, which are studded with lakes and waterways. Dartrey is one of the few parts of the county which is still home to the red squirrel, and is also populated with deer, so budding wildlife enthusiasts should bring their cameras.
Non-riders are welcome to walk in the estate while they wait for their mounted friends to return.
