Significant investment in local roads – Heather Humphreys
Fine Gael TD for Cavan-Monaghan Heather Humphreys has strongly welcomed recent funding allocations to road projects in Co Monaghan.
Deputy Humphreys was speaking following the recent announcement by the Minister for Transport that Monaghan County Council is to receive an additional €300,000 towards a number of local road projects.
“I am delighted that following the recent announcement by the Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar TD a number of major projects on local roads will receive a significant level of additional funding.
“The Clones to Newbliss road has received €105,000 in funding which will allow for the removal of a number of dangerous bends on this route. €65,000 has been provided for the completion of the Ballybay junction and €130,000 for works on the R189 at Gortakeegan.
“Given the current economic climate and the stretched financial times which the country finds itself in, I am pleased that the Minister has made it a priority not to allow our local roads to fall into a state of disrepair. Along with this substantial level of funding for road projects, the Minister has also announced that Monaghan County Council will receive an additional €33,000 towards the maintenance of local roads over the winter period. This brings the total level of funding available under winter maintenance funding to over €298,000.
“We are all aware of the huge level of disruption experienced on our roads as a result of recent harsh winters. During the ice and snow earlier this year, many local authorities struggled to keep main routes clear and gritted. In that respect, I welcome the fact that the Minister is planning ahead so that local authorities will be in a position to act decisively should we experience another severe cold snap this year,” conclude Deputy Humphreys.
