Carrickmacross Town Council has forwarded correspondence received at their June monthly meeting from the Patrick Kavanagh Rural and Literary Resource Centre in Inniskeen to the budget committee to consider.

The letter stated that the Centre is facing a shortfall of €2,070 from the supply and erection of plaques on the Literary Trail and politely requested that the town council would provide financial assistance. Sinn Féin councillor Noel Keelan said that Patrick Kavanagh was synonymous with Carrickmacross and proposed that the request for financial assistance would be taken into consideration by the budget committee. Fianna Fáil’s Pádraig McNally agreed with Cllr Keelan’s proposal and described it as “shabby” from the town’s perspective that the plaques had been erected but had not been completely paid for.

Fine Gael councillor Teresa Carolan also supported Cllr Keelan’s proposal saying that the Literary Trail attracted many visitors to the town. She suggested that the Chamber of Commerce could become involved also. Cllr Matt Carthy agreed with the view that the issue should be referred to the budget committee as did fellow councillors Catherine Martin and P.J O’Hanlon.
