Carrickmacross Town Council has welcomed the decision by Monaghan County Development Board to make an application to Pobal for funding towards the establishment of a Youth Café in Carrickmacross.
Sinn Féin councillor Matt Carthy who tabled a motion at a meeting on Monday, 14 June that the funding application would be welcomed by the town council said youth cafés have huge potential and there was a “desperate need” for one in Carrickmacross. “I hear a lot from young people that they have nowhere to go and have heard older people complaining about young people hanging around. A youth café would solve both these problems,” stated Cllr Carthy. Cllr Carthy’s views were echoed by party colleague Noel Keelan who said anything that would benefit the youth in the town was to be supported. “This is a fantastic way to go, a youth café would provide a safe and alcohol-free environment for young people,” enthused Cllr Keelan. The other councillors in attendance at Monday’s meeting also fully supported the motion.
