Bike Shelters to be erected in every Village and Town in Co Monaghan under Smarter Travel Initiative

Monaghan County Council has announced that it has been successful in securing funding from the Dept of Transport to erect bike shelters and racks in every town and village in Co Monaghan. The initiative is part of the Dept’s Smarter Travel programme, which encourages people to use alternative modes of transport to the motor car. The cycle parking bays will be provided in strategic locations which enable people to do more of their everyday business by bike, including;

- there will be new cycle shelters located at bus stops, to facilitate people wishing to travel by public transport

- a cycle stand will be provided at 25 community centres around the county

- covered shelters will be provided in public spaces in each of the county’s five towns

- 100 wall-mounted racks will be provided to retail establishments who wish to facilitate shoppers on cycles

The works are to be carried out in the autumn by contractor, and tender documents are currently being prepared for the supply of the shelters and racks.

Monaghan County Council are in the process of identifying the locations for each bike shelter and rack. Members of the public, community groups and shop owners are encouraged to contact the Council to make their requirements known. The project is being co-ordinated by Carol Lambe of the Office of Community & Enterprise, who was responsible for the highly successful Bike Week last June. Carol can be reached on 074 73725 or clambe@monaghancoco.ie
