Tautvydas Seimulous and David Hanley both members of Blayney Rovers, had great success and did their club proud when they were part of the Cavan Monaghan Underage League team who won the U12 Foyle Cup last weekend. The Foyle Cup tournament took place in Derry city and county with teams from the US, Spain, Scotland, England and all over Ireland taking part. A total of 138 teams took part this year making it the biggest year yet with scouts from Man Utd, Man City, Celtic, Hearts Blackburn and Ireland in attendance. The finals were played in the Brandywell stadium in front of a large crowd which included 200 Cavan/Monaghan supporters. The CMUL team won all but one of their games beating Linfield, one of the most well known club in Northern Ireland in their home ground; Hearts - one of the biggest clubs in Scotland as well as local teams Ballinamallard, Downpatrick and Coleraine The squad travelled to Derry on Monday last and stayed in Magee Campus for the full week. Dermot Hanley, club coach and CMUL League secretary also travelled with the team and organized transport, meals, etc for the 18 strong team plus coaches etc. During the tournament, the team, who consisted of U11 players from clubs in Cavan and Monaghan lucky enough to be accepted onto the Emerging Talent Programme, were treated like professional footballers with dieticians, physiotherapists, and mentors in attendance. Their routine although quite strict with designated eat and rest times also allowed time to relax at the Brunswick Activity Centre . Players were also brought to Buncranna each morning for a swim in the sea water. Both Tautvydas and David contributed greatly to the games with Tautvydas scoring a superb goal against Downpatrick Youth League in one of the first matches of the tournament. Unfortunately, he sustained a bad ankle injury during the Ballinamallard game which left him unfit to play in the rest of the tournament. David came close to scoring in the Derry and District Youth game but unfortunately the goalie made a superb save and denied him glory. . The Club would like to thank Manager Brian Finnegan, Coaches Brain Gaffney, Jason Maguire and Co-ordinator Martin Kiernan for their hard work, dedication and commitment to the team but especially to Tautvydas and David over the past 9 months and particularly during the past week. The club would also like to thank Tom Mohan who in the player’s own words was “inspirational”. A big thank you to the parents and committee members from the club who travelled up for the week and sang, drummed, cheered and encouraged the CMUL’s “orange army” to victory. Blayney Rovers are the only soccer club in Castleblayney that are willing to put players forward for opportunities such as the Emerging Talent Programme that lead onto bigger things such as the Foyle, Cashin, Umbro and Kennedy Cups. The club now has a proven record for player development and is a great addition to the clubs outstanding achievements this year - CMUL Club of the Year and Team of the Year.
