Monaghan Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a fatal road collision in Clontibret a fortnight ago.

Fintan Traynor, 20, of Lemgare, Clontibret, died after he was struck by a car on Sunday 26 June.

Mr Traynor was dropped off near to where his body was found by a taxi at around 3am on the night in question  following a night out.

It is believed he was walking to his family home a short distance away when he was struck by a vehicle that failed to stop at the scene of the accident.

The accident took place on a quiet road that links the villages of Clontibret and Annyalla with Derrynoose and Keady in Co Armagh.

Police on both sides of the Border are now looking for the driver and have appealed to anyone with information to come forward.

A garda spokesman said: "We are anxious for any shred of information which will piece together this young man's final movements."

He added that gardai wanted to speak to anyone who might have travelled on the road between 2am and 7.30am .

Gardaí have asked the driver of an Audi A4, which was seen in the area at the time of the crash, to come forward.

Gardaí said the road on which the collision took place is not widely used and believe there may be local people who might have valuable information and have not come forward.

Gardaí are also appealing for garages who may have been asked to carry out recent repairs on cars to contact them.

The driver of the car who dropped Mr Traynor and his friend home from Castleblaney that morning is also asked to come forward to assist gardaí in their investigation.

Anyone with information should contact Monaghan Garda Station on 047-77200, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line on 1800-666111 or any garda station
