Hello again everyone, I hope you all had a fantastic long weekend.

This week I am looking at alternate ways of eating, using foods that are naturally gluten free.

It  is very interesting that when someone decides to reduce or cut out gluten from their diets, the first thing they do is look for a replacement for grain based foods. For example gluten free bread, gluten free cakes, gluten free cookies. Then all I hear is,

‘It’s so hard to find nice gluten free bread most of it tastes like card board and is so expensive’

Would it not be more sensible to find an alternative rather than a replacement?

Let’s look first at foods that are ‘naturally’ gluten free:

Rice – Fresh fruits and vegetables – Pure proteins (by this I mean meat and fish that have not been modified for e.g. a chicken nugget) – Dairy products

There are many yummy naturally gluten free flours out there to cook and bake with, rice, tapioca, quinoa, chestnut etc etc, you can use some fabulous gluten free baking things like pureed carrots or apple juice for moisture.

So what can you eat for a naturally gluten free diet?

Breakfast can consist of eggs, fresh fruit or smoothies with flaxseeds.

Lunch can include homemade soups (be careful of ones you buy on the run they often have sachets added to increase salt and gluten!), salads, wrap made with a large lettuce leaf with all your yummy ingredients wrapped in the middle, hummous with fresh vegetable to dip.

Dinner can be a yummy chicken and rice dish, chunky vegetable stir fry with your choice of fish or meat or an omelette.

Use your imagination and explore the wonderful world of naturally gluten free foods – you’ll be amazed what you will be able to rustle up!
