Exam Advice for Students

Youth Work Ireland Monaghan Youth Information Service would like to wish all Junior and Leaving Certificate students the best of luck with their exams which start 9 June.

The Youth Information Service has a few easy to follow tips to help students deal with this difficult time. The night before the exam check you have enough pens, pencils etc, if needs be study last minute revision notes, get a good night’s sleep and don’t forget to set your alarm. On the morning of the exam eat a good breakfast, try not to study whilst waiting to enter the exam room and stay away from anyone who is panicking about the exams. When in the exam read the whole paper first and mark the questions you wish to do. Plan, time and number your answers and look at how many points are allocated to question, this will indicate how long they should be. Attempt everything required and never leave early, you never know when inspiration will hit!

After the exam, don’t wait around to hear the post-analysis of the exam paper, it will only make you feel worse. Take time to relax and maybe have a sleep before you start to study for the next exam. Melissa Mackin of Youth Work Ireland Monaghan would also like to remind students that it is not the end of the world if they think they didn’t do well in an exam. “That exam is over now, forget about and look ahead to your next exam and don’t let if affect your performance overall. Always talk to someone of you are feeling down or anxious about the exams before or after. You will get through this and it won’t seem such a big stress in a few months time. Good luck to all.”

The service is free and confidential and no appointment is necessary. Youth Work Ireland-Monaghan’s Youth Information Service is part-funded by the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs. The Youth Information Offices in the county open Monday – Thursday from 10am until 6pm and on Friday from 10am until 5pm.
