Fine Gael TD Heather Humphreys says that recent figures showing major growth in the Irish export sector are to be welcomed.
Deputy Humphreys said “I am very encouraged by the latest CSO figures which show Irish exports were up 11% for the month of February to just over €8billion.This increase coincides with a fall in imports by 3% to €4.3billion with the result being a trade surplus of €3.8billion. This is a 33% increase when compared with the previous month.”
“I believe these figures highlight the key role that export-driven companies have in contributing to Ireland’s economic growth and recovery. The Minister for Enterprise Trade and Employment, Richard Bruton TD has stated that the Government’s policy of improving Ireland’s competiveness continues to be a priority, I believe the figures relating to trade that are now being achieved is a reflection of the Government’s efforts in this regard.”
“Without doubt this is positive story. Despite the recession, Irish exports are going from strength to strength. It is my hope that the announcement of the Government’s jobs initiative in the coming weeks will take account of these figures and focus on the retention and creation of jobs in this vital sector”, concluded Deputy Humphreys. |
