The Parent’s Association of Our Lady’s Secondary School, Castleblayney are holding their annual Flag Day in Castleblayney town on Thursday 28th April and Friday 29th April, 2011. They are asking for people to please be generous in giving donations to enable the Parents Association purchase two Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machines for use by staff and pupils at the School.  An AED machine is a small portable electronic device that analyses the hearts rhythm and delivers a shock only if it is needed. Cardiac experts estimate that at least one young Irish person under the age of 35 dies suddenly each week from cardiac diseases such as Cardiomyopathy or Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS). Most victims of SADS are active youngsters who report no symptoms before their fatal collapse. Having an AED can make the difference between life and death.

It is the wish of Our Lady’s Secondary School to have one AED located at all times in the Gym and another AED available at all times for use on trips away from school such as sporting trips (Football, Camogie and Basketball, etc) educational/cultural outings and school tours. At present at Our Lady’s Secondary School there are 12 Teachers and staff members trained in CPR and the use of an AED. Our Lady’s Secondary School is also very proud of the 24 students in Fourth and Fifth Year who took time out from their classes to train in CPR and using an AED. The School intends to train 12 Transition Year students each year and to continue the upskilling of staff and Teachers in these life saving skills.  Collectors from the Parent’s Association and volunteers will be collecting at various locations throughout the town on the above dates. Please give generously, you could save a life.
