| HERD HEALTH MATTERS TO AWARD WINNING FARMER
If you are looking for the best beef farmer in the UK, then you have to go no further than Cool Brae Farm in Kircubbin, Co Down to meet Sam Chesney who has just been named Farmer’s Weekly Beef Farmer of the Year 2011.
Sam beat off stiff competition from across the UK to bring the coveted title to Northern Ireland by focusing on excellent herd health , grassland management and superior genetics.
“It’s a great honour to win such a prestigious accolade,” comments Sam, “particularly as it is a UK-wide award. I’m delighted to put Cool Brae Farm and indeed Northern Ireland agriculture on the UK map.”
Cool Brae Farm has a 120-strong herd of Limousin suckler cows mated to British Blues and Limousin which gives the option of finishing animals for beef or selling them as stores and replacement suckler heifers. Sam has also incorporated Angus into the herd due to the demand for this cross being strong in the province.
“Herd Health is a top priority for us and has played a big part is securing this award,” explains Sam. We have a detailed herd health plan in place. “At the moment we are preparing for housing and focusing on the control of worms and liver fluke. Closmectin Pour On is central to our housing preparation , we used the injection when it was first launched by Norbrook Laboratories Ltd and now the pour on when it became available .
“The extent of Closamectin’s capability in treating fluke, worms and lice and the simplicity of how is it administered is what makes this product work for me,” “Closamectin Pour On gives me a more convenient and effective way of treating all stock on the farm with minimal stress to the animal and indeed to myself.
