| The Ring of Gullion’s First Annual Photography Competition
The Ring of Gullion with Newry and Mourne District Council are hosting a fantastic amateur Photography Competition in the
Ring of Gullion for the first time. The theme this year is “Wildlife, landscape and Heritage”, which photographers are free
to interpret any way they choose.
Enter now to be in with a chance of winning one of three prizes; 1st prize an overnight stay, breakfast and treatment for
two in the Enchanted Spa and Retreat in Mullaghbawn, four ball in Cloverhill Golf course followed by dinner for four in
Cross Square Hotel, and 3rd prize is a meal for two in Murphys Bar and Restaurant Meigh. So get out there take a drive,
walk, or cycle in the Ring of Gullion AONB and take a few snaps. The 12 best images will be published in a Ring of Gullion
2012 calendar and each of the top 12 winning entries will receive a complimentary calendar. The top 100 images will be on
public display in Newry’s new GAP Gallery in the newly refurbished library from 3rd October until 8th October.
You and your winning entries will enjoy a wealth of publicity on our website, the calendar and on Twitter and Facebook. So

We have been honoured that the competition will be judged by Newry and Mourne District Council’s Mayor, Charlie Casey,
photographer Bridie Casey with over 30 years experience, Assistant Director for NMDC Arts Aisleain McGill, and the Ring of
Gullion Officer Darren Rice.

Events - Whats on?
Two guided History of Gullion Tours – Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September – European Heritage Open Day
Take advantage of this fully guided bus tour taking in the most impressive monuments and archaeological sites South Armagh
has to offer. Local guide, Una Walsh will lead you on your journey through the breathtaking landscape of the area whilst
enlightening you about the rich natural, built and cultural heritage, not forgetting the many myths and legends in which the
area is steeped.
The tour is free of charge however places are limited therefore pre-booking by no later than Thursday 8th 2011 is essential.
The bus will pick up from Newry Tourist Information Centre (Bagenals Castle) at 10.30am and return at approximately 5pm.
Parking is available in the area.
The bus will stop at Crossmaglen for a lunch break of approximately 45 mins to allow passengers to get some lunch.
Facilities in Crossmaglen include public toilets, cafés, restaurants and a hotel.

The Big Draw Saturday 1 October 2011 14:00-16:00 Slieve Gullion Courtyard
Join us at Slieve Gullion Courtyard to put pen to paper, brush to paint, chalk to board and help us create mountain sized
pieces of art that even the ‘GIANT’ Finn Mac Cool would be proud of.
‘DRAWING’ on Slieve Gullion’s history, wildlife and geology as inspiration, this ‘BIG’ art event will ensure that the whole
family have a ‘GREAT’ time together creating ‘MONSTER’ pieces of art. Come dressed to get messed and ready to explore the
big outdoors for ideas.
Ramble Round the Ring of Gullion
Explore the landscape and embrace the breathtaking views of the area as your guide leads you on your journey to the summit
of Slieve Gullion, to see and learn about the magical Calliagh Berra’s Lake and the ancient burial tomb where the Calliagh
Berra’s is said to have lived beneath. The tomb is highest of its kind in Ireland. This event takes place on Sunday 2 October
2011 at 10am, leaving from car park part way up Forest Drive at Slieve Gullion Forest Park.
Christmas Wonderland Saturday 17 December 2011 14:00 - 16:00 Slieve Gullion Courtyard
The ‘Christmas Wonderland’ event will take you and your family on a magical journey through Slieve Gullion’s forest.
Children not only hunt for clues to help Santa’s elves get ready for Christmas day, but throughout their journey, they
learn about the forest’s wildlife and take part in fun interactive activities.
Back at the courtyard, children have an opportunity to make their own special Christmas decorations and sing Christmas
carols. Prizes for the best elf, fairy or Christmas costume. Adults encouraged to come dressed up also.
All the events are free of charge and not to be missed. Places are limited therefore pre-booking is essential.
