Comet Records to Close

It’s one of temple bar’s most recognisable shops, but next month independent music seller Comet Records is due to close before re-emerging as an online speciality shop.

Owner Brian O’Kelly plans to sell collectible Irish Releases through two websites due to launch within the next few months. While they are being built the store, located on Cope Street, is selling off its stock for €4 or less per item.

Talking to Conor Pope of The Irish Times O’Kelly said “There is a whole generation who have never paid anything for music and I don’t know if they will ever be prepared to pay anything for music.”

Comet Records has joined a long list of independent shops all over Ireland that have closed their doors since the recession hit, with many owners citing multinational chain stores and the internet as their reason for closing.
