Farmers Rejecting Price Pressure

Monaghan IFA Livestock Committee Chairman Andrew Boylan has said that factories were failing to get cattle at the lower quoted prices and having to pay last week’s prices of €3.06/kg to €3.10/kg as a base for steers and €3.10/kg to €3.15/kg for heifers. According to Mr Boylan, farmers were rejecting any price cuts and not moving cattle at less than last week’s prices. The Livestock Committee Chairman added that cattle numbers are tight and the increase in older cattle numbers is now gone out of the system. On future supplies, he said the CMMS data is showing that there are 100,000 less cattle in the pipeline over 12 months of age.
