Monaghan IFA Sheep Chairman Eamon Markey has welcomed the allocation of an
additional €500,000 in promotional funding from An Bord Bia specifically for the lamb sector.

According to Mr Markey this funding will be targeted in full at the home market
and should provide a significant boost to domestic consumption and underpin lamb prices. The IFA sheep farmers’ leader said the additional Bord Bia funding is aimed at addressing the challenging consumption issues facing lamb on the domestic market. “The IFA has proposed a strong TV campaign on lamb together with specific retail and butcher promotional programmes,” Mr Markey added.

Concluding Mr Markey said that lamb supplies remain tight with the factories struggling to get numbers earlier this week.  He added that factories have paid from €5.00/kg to €5.25/kg for lambs this week with €5.10 to €5.15/kg most common up to 21kgs carcase weight. Mr Markey also said that some plants have paid to 21.5kgs carcase weight.
