GOVERNMENT MUST PRIORITISE RETAILER LEGISLATION - IFA

IFA President John Bryan has challenged the Government to explain why their
‘Consumer and Competition Bill’ is not a priority for publication during the
summer session in the Dáil.

Referring to a recent Government publication announcing the Legislative
Programme for the coming parliamentary session, John Bryan said that he was
amazed that this Bill was not listed.

Mr. Bryan said that both Government Parties had made a big play of this
issue in the run up to the General Election, along with the Programme for
Government commitment to ‘enact the Fair Trade Act, which will ban a number
of unfair trading practices in the retail sector such as ‘hello money’ which
suppliers have to pay to secure a place for their goods on supermarket
shelves’.

John Bryan said that IFA was led to believe from the previous administration
that this legislation was well advanced and was ready to be brought before
Cabinet at the end of last year.

The IFA President has called on the Government to prioritise this ‘Consumer
and Competition Bill’ and address the serious inequities in the food supply
chain.
