Legends and Lunatics Take Over Blayney
By Cianna McNally

boxersLAST Saturday night was alright for fighting in the Glencarn Hotel, Castleblayney as men and women from the mid-Monaghan town and further afield took part in a charity boxing event.

The ‘Legends and Lunatics’ boxing event was organised by Castleblayney Amateur Boxing Club in association with St Mary’s Hospital Patient Comfort Fund. A packed house witnessed 17 bouts in total, 15 were fought by men and two by women. Each contestant was sponsored by a local business.

Speaking to monaghanlife.ie, Chairman of Castleblayney ABC Mickey Duffy described the night as a “very big success.” A total of €1,100 was raised for the Ashbury Ward in St Mary’s Hospital, a cause close to Mr Duffy’s heart as his mother is a patient there. A cheque will be presented to the local hospital at a later date. It is hoped to use the rest of the money to pay for accommodation for St Catherine’s Boxing Club from Ontario, Canada when they visit Castleblayney next year. Castleblayney ABC struck up a friendship with the Canadian club in 2004.

Mr Duffy would like to take this opportunity to extend his thanks to all the boxers who took part in the event and provided such entertainment, Garda Pat Merrick for all his help and the businesses that sponsored the boxers. Thanks are also expressed to those who came and supported the night, Jason Hughes for all his help, Ted Brennan from the Lisnagrieve Pipe Band and all those who helped in any way to make the whole event such a success.
